There’s few things I love more than an ocean sunset, so when the day-long storm was over and the sun broke through the cloud cover, I wasn’t the only one who headed to the cliffs. It felt a bit otherworldy to see so many humans standing on the edge of the continent staring at the sun. The sunset itself was hard to capture because it became so bright as the sun neared the horizon. I used a twilight filter to dampen the light and then caught the reflection in a standing tide pool. Here’s a similar shot for those who…

PELICANS!!!
I know that title is in all caps! Because PELICANS!!! I love those birds, and today, they flew right over to my side of the water and it was like they were posing for my camera, at least till my battery ran out. These are the American White Pelican, which is second only to the Brown Pelican in my list of favorite birds (which is a short list and consists of pelicans and bald eagles and great horned owls). This flock was clearly having dinner, skimming the shoreline along the beach, much to the consternation of the egret who had…
Freaky Friday: Halloween
It’s Halloween next week: black cats, pumpkins, and scary trees. Well, that’s all I got, scary trees. I have run across some good ones in my travels, so in honor of Halloween, here are my favorites. This one, from Kalaloch in Washington, looks like a deformed giant carrying the weight of the world, some with his arms and some pushed ahead of his face. Can you see it now? People try to make trees in their yard look scary for the holiday. This tree at Schafer State Park in Washington has that look nailed, year round. These moss-covered trees, at…
Weekly Update: Oct 26, 2016
Time for the weekly update, a new feature on my website. I’ll try to make this a weekly Wednesday thing looking back at my vagabond week. Let’s see, where was I last Thursday? Oh, right, I was in the middle of five nights at Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, nestled among the redwoods and hard by a beautiful river. I walked through the Stout Grove, huge redwoods (which is saying something!) and the beauty of it is too much for one photo, so I am working on a gallery of shots. For now, here’s one that I hope gets across the feeling of…
Sunday Serenity: Eureka Coast
Sunday used to be the day I tried to do too much. Get all those weekend chores done before Monday and the workweek hit. Now, not so much 🙂 It’s the day campgrounds clear out, and I try to relax and not get caught up in the frenzy of people packing up and hitting the road. So with that in mind, the Sunday Serenity series was born. Today’s subject: The south jetty in Eureka, at the end of a long bumpy road off Highway 101. An hour of taking photos, another hour editing, and three emerged as the winners. First,…
