This week is all Nova Scotia, because I’m in love with this place. It’s a lot of different places, actually, so let’s begin. The photo at the top of the post is my camping spot just across the water from Digby. There wasn’t much of a crowd at this campground, so I had my own little patch of grass for the weekend. And with the Bay of Fundy tide show right out my window, it was a prime spot indeed. I drove down the Digby Neck Scenic Drive to Sandy Cove, a beach said to have sea glass at low…

Sunday Serenity: Exploring
Fear is all in my head, I know that. And yet, since I broke my hand 363 days ago, I haven’t really overcome my fear of falling again and breaking something else. It’s affected what I do to some extent, especially when it comes to exploring. What if I fall, what if I break something and I can’t be a vagabond? What if? What if? What if? For a person who generally doesn’t deal in “what if” scenarios, this has been a challenging year. I’ve forced myself to take solo hikes, where I spent an inordinate amount of time looking…
Canadian Maritimes
It occurred to me as I was walking around Rockwood Park’s lovely display of the Canadian provincial flags that I couldn’t actually name all 10 provinces. And then I thought that perhaps some people might not know much about the Canadian Maritimes where I’m traveling for the next several weeks. If you’re Canadian, you can skip the rest of this post (unless you want to read and then correct my inevitable errors!) If you’re not Canadian, and you have no idea where Nova Scotia actually *is* on a map, this post is for you. This is Canada. It’s a huge…
Fundy: Highs and Lows
Staying west of St. John for a few nights was my first experience with the tides of the Bay of Fundy, and it was pretty darned amazing, especially considering my location was at the low end of the tidal range. According to this map, I was in the 9 meter (29.5 feet) range and by the time I finish my visit to Nova Scotia, I will have experienced the highest end of the range near the Minas Basin (14 meters, or 46 feet). Cool. Here’s the view across New River Beach towards the picnic area and hiking trails, at close…
Weekly Update: May 23, 2018
Yes, I made it to Canada. There might be one or two people on this planet that don’t know this yet. I crossed the border on Friday morning, where it was me, the Canadian customs person, and a flock of birds. No guns, mace, alcohol, etc. so I was cleared through in under a minute. She wasn’t at all impressed that my trailer is Canadian 🙂 So now I am in New Brunswick, with the sign (above) to prove it. My first experience in a Provincial Park (New River Beach) was quite nice, with widely spaced sites and many, many…
