Ah, negative space, one of my favorite 52 Frames photography challenges! Last year, I went big with my image, using a long shot down the beach with a tiny figure in the corner. This year, I focused (yeah, photographer’s pun there) on a smaller scale. Where I’m staying this week has a nice 2 mile loop around a lake, with dense forest, the occasional wildflower, and a concrete waterfall. For this shot, I played with B&W and then went with a slightly sepia look. I think the flower needs to be brighter to really work, though, and I couldn’t post-process…

Review: Modoc Campground, SC
This is my second visit to Modoc and I’m almost afraid to share this gem of a campground. Situated on the east bank of Lake Strom Thurmond (no, I’m not kidding, they really named a lake after a segregationist), there are 60+ sites, all except one with electric and water hookups. And if you get lucky, your site will be a gentle slope or set of steps down to the water…
Review: Skidaway Island State Park, GA
This is my fourth visit to Skidaway Island State Park, and I had grand plans to visit the long lane of live oaks at Wormslow, kayak along the backside of the park and look for birds, and pick up some BBQ at the local joint I like so much. But — and this is a huge but here — I had never visited Skidaway in high summer. It’s actually hella hot and humid and I was completely disincented to go much of anywhere, to be honest. The daily highs are low 90s and the low on Tuesday morning (THE LOW)…
52 Frames: Details
Ah, finally a challenge I could get into, details. I had a macro lens, a full camera battery, and… oh, wait, not a lot of time. This past week, I moved out of the airbnb, got back on the road, and moved campgrounds twice. Which, as it turned out, didn’t leave a lot of time for staring at details of whatever crossed my path. Early in the week, I took a few shots around Gainesville, figuring I could use one of them as backups in case time really got away from me later. This ivy climbing a brick wall caught…
70 Years Ago: A Family Story
Seventy years ago today, an eighteen year old UCLA dropout and a twenty five year old college graduate stood next to each other in a church in Southern California and took their wedding vows in front of family and friends. The bride wore a lace-covered white dress and the groom sported the same suit he’d worn to his best man’s wedding a few weeks before. There was a fancy reception and, later, a fancy album of formal wedding pictures to document the event. Only these two people didn’t actually get married on July 21, 1950. They’d eloped to Vegas in…
