Let’s just say this post really has an audience of one: my brother. We talked about Martinsville when we were hanging out at Bristol, and how my dad would always call it “the paperclip” track because it’s got long straightways and tight corners. Same half-mile distance as Bristol, but different as night and day. Martinsville is open and long, not ringed all the way around with seating. At Bristol, I had to pay to take a tour to get on the track. Martinsville? I just drove up to the turn 4 gate and parked, then walked right onto the track…

Weekly Update: Aug 29, 2018
I’ve been sticking close to the water, despite being far from the coast. I started the week at Watauga, a beautiful little campground run by the Tennessee Valley Authority. I have to admit that launching my kayak from my campsite is the way to go. I’ll be back here before the season ends, and am looking forward to more of that easy kayaking. Friday, I moved over to Horseshoe Point, a Corps of Engineers site back up in Virginia, close enough to the Blue Ridge mountains that I drove a bit on the Parkway. I wasn’t supposed to, but I…

Vacation week is over and I’m back in the trailer full-time. For four nights, this was where Breeze hung out while I enjoyed the luxurious hot showers and baths of a Holiday Inn Express. Ah, that was awesome. Breeze has a shower, but with the small fresh water and grey water tanks, it’s not like I can stand there and let the hot water run forever. But I can in a hotel 🙂 I took a day trip to Greyson Highlands State Park in Virginia, where friends of mine are working for the month. Imagine my surprise when I pulled…
Sunday Serenity: Two Years On
It was two years ago today that I turned in my laptop and badges and walked out the door of my employer for the previous four years. In doing so, I ended 4 decades of working full-time (a misnomer for high tech travelers, to be sure). I began a new chapter in my life, but I honestly didn’t know how things would go. Two years on, I’m happy to say things are going well. The first year was a struggle for many reasons: lots of things broke, including me a few times, and I fell into the classic trap for…
Weekly Update: Aug 15, 2018
It’s been what seems like a fairly typical summer week: hot and humid, afternoon or evening thunderstorms, and a daily workout for the trailer’s air conditioner. It wasn’t till Monday that the heat wave broke and I could enjoy sitting outside without creating my own little puddle of sweat. Yep, southern summers are indeed different from the dry heat I grew up with in Southern California! I finished out my time at Gettysburg with an evening drive along the Union line and the light was definitely with me this time. I am already planning a return trip next summer, when…
