The first state park in Washington, Larrabee State Park just south of Bellingham, started with a family donation of 20 acres and now covers 2,683 acres from shoreline to mountains. The Larrabee campsite area is literally squeezed in between Route 11, a two-lane scenic road with lots of weekend traffic, and the Burlington Northern railroad line, which provides a half-dozen train whistles and rumbling trains to the mix. Between the two, and the close quarters in the campsite area, it can be hard to feel like you’re really escaping civilization.

Well, this is different…
I handed in my keys, my parking card, and gave away what was left of my furniture, so I am officially now out of the West Seattle apartment I moved into almost exactly a year ago. Now I am committed to this vagabond life, all my stuff either in Breeze or in Bella (mostly the big awkward stuff like telescope tripod, camp chair, awning, and other stuff I need to set up camp). I spent most of yesterday afternoon sorting things out from the bags I had basically thrown things into just to vacate the apartment and try to beat…
Westward Home
Started the day one state and about 5 hours from home, ready in some ways for this trip to be over, and in other ways, not so much. The whole “new place every night or two” deal was tiring; not just the breaking down and setting up camp but also the decisions on where to stay and uncertainty of the location and, of course, the driving to get there. My future plans will be much less about one-night RV-park stands and a lot more about staying in a place at least a week at a time, if not two or…
Westward Ho: Almost Home
Well, considering that home is still Seattle for a few more months, I’m almost home. But, really, Breeze is starting to feel like home, and I’m pretty excited to clean out my apartment next week and move the rest of the vagabond life stuff into the trailer and start figuring out how to make it all fit. And, to be honest, I am kind of wondering what is back in that apartment that I haven’t needed for a month, other than work-related clothes and some books. Wednesday afternoon through this morning, I hung out in Hailey with a friend, soaking…
Westward Ho: Day 14
An easy day today, sliding from Arco over to Hailey, via the back roads of Idaho. Why Hailey? Well, friends there have a spare room, a place to park my rig, and, oh, yes, a hot tub. And a lovely deck where I am typing this entry as the wind shakes the aspen leaves and the birds sing their happiness that the snow is gone and spring is well and truly here. On the way to Hailey, I stopped for a few hours to check out what has to be the coolest named national monument ever: Craters of the Moon….
