That’s a wrap for the Southern Tour. After 320 straight days in the southern United States, I crossed the border from Virginia into Maryland yesterday and left the South behind for the rest of this year. When I moved my domicile to Florida in January of 2018, I honestly didn’t think I would spend a lot of time in the South so it was surprising to me to find myself spending 11 months straight deep in Florida, South and North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, and Virginia. Counting all of 2018 into the mix, I’ve spent 14 of the last 18…

Hard Truth
On a hillside in Montgomery, Alabama, there stands a monument that exists to expose to the world the cruel and inhumane behavior that one group of people can perpetrate on another group. This is the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, which in the words of its founder is a “sacred space for truth-telling and reflection about racial terror in America and its legacy.” My own words cannot capture the context of this place as clearly as this text from the entrance to the Memorial: Like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the structure of the memorial itself is part of the…
Update: Jun 20, 2019
Just as I was writing this week’s update, a huge gale blew out of nowhere and sent everything flying at the campground. Part of a tree crashed down about 10 feet from my trailer (and when I say “part of a tree” I mean something about 12 feet long!) and my Clam shelter tried to become airborne despite being well-staked. So forgive me if this is a shorter than planned post; my heart is still pounding and I’ve got one eye on the NOAA Radar app on my iPad. The cover photo is what the lake looks like when it’s…
Update: Jun 13, 2019
Note: Yes, it’s Thursday, not Wednesday, the usual day for my weekly update. Yesterday was one of those days where nothing went right, from showing up at the Subaru dealer where they didn’t have my appointment on the books to getting lost on the way home. So I decided not to test the internet connectivity gods and postponed the update till today. Last week was a slice of life in the small Southern town of Floyd, Virginia. My friends Jack and Lee have lived near there for decades (I know, we’re all really old people when you get right down…
Throwback Thursday: Four Years of Jun 6th
One of the fun things about having all my photos in a Lightroom Library is that I can sort them (and search them) by date. I thought it would make a fun post to see where I was on Jun 6th every year since I picked up my Safari Condo Alto 1743. In 2016, I was still hanging around the Seattle area, finishing out my job and camping in local parks. This was Dash Point State Park, where I stayed 3 times that summer. And, fun fact, everything in this photo except the Alto is stuff I no longer own….
