It’s been a quiet week here on the Cape. I’m still enjoying the whole “not moving” thing although I’m starting to get antsy to see new places, so I think I’m timing my Aug 22 move to my next spot pretty well. I’ve done a little rearranging and recycling of things inside the trailer in preparation for moving on, including a run to the local Goodwill donation center. It’s a bit amazing to me that after a year of living in my trailer, I still have things I can cut out: the bin that was too big, the clothes I…

Sunday Serenity: Loss
Yesterday I worked most of the day to reorganize my photo libraries, splitting out family and friends from the rest of my images. It was a slow, painstaking task to make sure I didn’t lose anything, and yet that was the easy part. The hard part was realizing how many people are gone from my circles of family, close friends, friends, and acquaintances. I pushed away from the computer and walked down to the beach to catch the sunset, a bit overwhelmed by the losses over the years seen compressed into a few hours time. Some were old when I…
Beach Ikebana
Ikebana is the Japanese art of arranging flowers, using a set of rules that emphasize line, shape, and form. Several years ago, during a walk on the west coast, a good friend introduced me to the art of “beach ikebana” where nature does the arranging and our part is to notice and appreciate the display. Kelp and seaweed in large clumps are usually considered rather ugly as well as a nuisance to beachgoers. Take a closer look, isolate one bladder and stipe, and there is art at your feet. A single strand in sand, highlighted by the late afternoon sun,…
Thursday Throwback: DC Institutions
A year ago today, I was on my last business trip, this one to Washington, D.C. My traveling companion, and co-worker, was from Dublin, so he wanted to see more than the White House and Washington Monument that we’d seen back in February. And, given the political state of things, I thought it would be good to show our institutions some love. They have survived Presidents, Congresses, wars, and economic depressions, and they will survive the turmoil in which we find ourselves now. The United States Capitol building was beautiful, even under construction. The Visitor Center (under that glass at…
Weekly Update: August 2, 2017
Another week of beach photos, so if you’re in a vacation state of mind – or need to be – this is definitely your lucky day! Consider this the abbreviated “my vacation photos” album that everyone posts on FB. First there’s the sports photo… Then the wildlife photo (yes, that is a coyote on Cape Cod!)… The cute sea shells, which are periwinkles in a row… And, of course, people swimming… But I bet there’s one photo few people have in their summer vacation album. The people across the street must have an awesome view of the night sky… They…
