Ikebana is the Japanese art of arranging flowers, using a set of rules that emphasize line, shape, and form. Several years ago, during a walk on the west coast, a good friend introduced me to the art of “beach ikebana” where nature does the arranging and our part is to notice and appreciate the display.
Kelp and seaweed in large clumps are usually considered rather ugly as well as a nuisance to beachgoers. Take a closer look, isolate one bladder and stipe, and there is art at your feet.
A single strand in sand, highlighted by the late afternoon sun, offers both simplicity and grace.
