Close to Home: Balance

Posted on April 26, 2020December 1, 2022 by Annie

There’s a Jon Kabat-Zinn quotation that has stuck with me for years: wherever you go, there you are. When I was a traveler, I would get on a jet and, boom, there I was in a new place. One day Dublin, the next day Luxembourg. Is this flight going to Beijing or Sydney? In my last job, I traveled so much that I was never home more than three or four weeks at a time. Then I became a full-time vagabond and moved on average every 4-5 days. To wake up every morning in exactly the same spot for a…

Close to Home: Spring

Posted on April 25, 2020December 1, 2022 by Annie

Despite the spate of 90F (32C) days here in Gainesville, we are still in the midst of Spring. This morning, the neighborhood gardens displayed fresh blooms of all colors and scents, from the heavenly smell of jasmine to the soft scent of that most southern of blooms, the white magnolia. So today, no deep thoughts or long posts, just a bit of beauty from that most wonderful of seasons, Spring. Blooming is one thing; but blooming where you are planted is another. It’s so easy to say, “I will bloom when I am there”, but you need to be saying,…

Close to Home: Shelter

Posted on April 24, 2020December 1, 2022 by Annie

The phrase “shelter in place” took on new meaning last night. After getting a tornado warning on my phone, I walked into the house and asked where one might go if a tornado decided to drop in on us. The hallway, with all the doors closed, was the answer. That made sense; it’s in the center of the house and it doesn’t have any windows. Sort of like what I learned to do with earthquakes when I was growing up in California: get away from glass and stay low in a door frame or other strong structure. On this morning’s…

Close to Home: Uncertainty

Posted on April 23, 2020December 1, 2022 by Annie

I am feeling uncertain a lot these days, as I am sure many people are. So many unknowns: How long do I have to stay home? How many people are carrying the virus? How much risk is there to going to the store? Will there be a second wave, and when? When I started out as a vagabond, I was coming off years as a project manager, where my job was to reduce uncertainty and manage risks. I was really good at my job and used those same skills to plan the tow vehicle and trailer purchase and pickup. After…

Close to Home: Time

Posted on April 22, 2020December 1, 2022 by Annie

Yesterday was a very low-energy day. I spent most of the day inside my trailer. Glued to the air conditioning, I watched a movie I’d seen before, and did some quilting. On days when it feels like I control nothing, quilting makes me feel better. I can see progress. I am making something that will stand the test of time. Time. There’s that word again. Sometimes I feel like it mocks me as I stay stationary, day after day, week after week. Yesterday was a lot about me feeling frustrated. I want it to be time for me to go…
