I’ve been in South Carolina for a month and in the South for six, and still the live oaks fascinate me. There really is nothing like them. I used to think redwoods were my favorite but these live oaks, well, they’re growing on me. On the far end of the beach, past the point where the dogs can go is the place where the plovers nest and where this remnant of a tree stands its ground. Last winter, this tree was covered with shells and small tokens that people had left over time, many of them mementos of people special…

Tuesday Trees: South Carolina
One of my photography projects this year is focusing on trees, and so here’s some of the trees of coastal South Carolina. Live oaks can be strange and wonderful and I’m mesmerized by the shapes they take. This hiking trail isn’t far from the beach, as you might guess by the sandy ground. All the trees on the left side along this part of the trail are slanted to the right, but I’ve no idea why. The image below is the same trees as the first shot, a few days later. The lighting and shadows make the trail a sort…
Tree Bones
Florida, as it turns out, has barrier islands, too, and that’s where I’m exploring this week. My first beach walk was fantastic – all kinds of downed trees and branches, the remnants of hurricanes that have hit this coast steadily over the years. There are some seriously twisted shapes on this beach and I need to come back here with my good camera and play around. This is my favorite one so far. It looks like a witch might look if a witch was a tree. Stay tuned for more… The Coastal Images Tour has just started and all sorts…
Ode to Monterey Bay
I spent last week hanging out in my old hometown of Aptos, a quick visit sans trailer to catch up with some friends and celebrate the birthday of one newly-minted teenager. And get some beach time along the shores of Monterey Bay. It’s beautiful in the morning, when few but the wanderers and runners are out on the sand at low tide. And it’s lovely in the middle of the day, especially when the surf’s up a bit. It really is best at sunset. Crowds gathered almost every time to enjoy the show. Can you blame them? The beach is…
African-American History Monument
On this, a momentous Election Day in the United States, I can think of no better photos to share than those I took last month at the African-American History Monument in Charleston, South Carolina. To get to that monument, I first had to walk by this one: It’s a memorial by “the Women of South Carolina” to the Confederate Soldiers of the Civil War. Tributes on two sides of the base to the “truth, courage and patriotism” of those who died fighting for the right to enslave their fellow human beings. I just shook my head and walked on around…
