The leaves have been changing colors here in southern Virginia for the last few weeks and it’s been glorious to watch. Every day, another tree joins in the display, a quick change artist from green to more festive fall colors.
I looked forward to walking around the campground every day, looking for new colors. Instead of putting my head down and working on a problem as I walked, I looked around me. Instead of plugging into a podcast, I listened to the birds, their last songs of the fall echoing through the woods.
I realized how much of the time I’ve not been living in the moment. I’m thinking about the next campground, next year, last month, 20 years ago. I think about everything and notice nothing most of the time. Silly me.
I turned off the podcasts, put my problems aside, and started looking around me, searching out the most colorful trees, noticing the changes the morning after a cold snap or how the leaves fall as the winds come through.
All too soon, the show will be over. I’m enjoying it while it lasts, now that I’m really here.
Nothing is more precious than being in the present moment. Fully alive, fully aware.

Beautiful! Well said.
It’s been a gorgeous fall here too. Glad you’re enjoying it “down south!”
One of the things I miss about not living on the East Coast anymore is the fall. It’s the most beautiful time of year and an awesome opportunity to get out and listen to nature while admiring the beauty around you.
I’m glad you’re more aware. The colors this fall have been AMAZING! I know I say that every year, but this year is way over the top. Enjoy!!
Be here now. . . Thanks of the reminder. I’m trying to talk myself into doing my morning exercise and trying to be mindful the day may come when I can’t do it. Enjoy now!
