Need a break from your day? Come walk with me through the magical redwoods of Henry Cowell State Park, near Santa Cruz in California…

I wasn’t going to get all the way up to the northern California redwoods on this trip through the Golden State, so I was happy to meet up with friends to visit the local redwoods. Believe it or not, in the 12 years I lived here, I never actually visited this place. SIlly me!

There’s nothing like redwoods to give you both a sense of scale and a sense of wonder.

Craning my neck all the way back to look straight up at the canopy high overhead was so worth it. Framed by the rare blue sky, the green foliage and the dark brown trunks rising so far above me was such an experience.

And there’s nothing better than hiking with friends. And kids. Especially kids who bring such wonder to the experience, from spotting dew on spider webs to making fog by exhaling into the rays of sun on the path.

That’s it, that’s the post. Redwoods, friends, and a sense of beauty in the world. Enough for today, isn’t it?
If I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last throughout life, as an unfailing antidote against the boredom and disenchantments of later years, the sterile preoccupation with things that are artificial, the alienation from the sources of our strength.

Thank you!!
I love the redwoods. There is no majesty like them. Also Rachel Carson’s quote is spot on. Thanks, Annie.
Oh, what a place to build such memories, Luanne. Something about those redwoods, so old, having seen so much in their lifetimes, makes me always feel a bit better about our crazy world.
Just what the doctor ordered. Beautiful!
Oh this is so beautiful, Annie. A sight for sore eyes this dreary rainy Vancouver Thursday. I think I will go visit the local mountains and walk that trail that you and I were on, some years ago, by Seymour River.
Thank you. That’s beautiful.
Henry Cowell State Park holds a very special place in my heart. I can’t count the families picnics held there. My mom’s last birthday celebrated there. My father’s celebration of life was happened there. In fact, the last time I saw so many family members, it was there. And every time I go there, they are there with me.
I love Henry Cowell. It holds a special place in my heart. Enjoy. Wish I could be there walking with you.
