Weekly Update: Jul 18, 2018

Posted on July 18, 2018July 17, 2018 by Annie

Not sure where I will be while this is going on, so I’ll just summarize the week minus a day 🙂 When y’all left me last week, I was at a riverside campground in the countryside southeast of Quebec City. This place, La Jolie Rochelle, was wonderful and we filled the riverside…

Friday Fun: Groceries in Quebec

Posted on July 13, 2018August 30, 2020 by Annie

(En français: épiceries au québec) One of the most interesting ways to learn about a new place is to wander through a grocery store. You learn how much fresh and local is valued in the rest of the world outside the US and can explore foods unique to the place you’re in. This post, then, aims to give you a sense of what it’s like to shop for groceries in a small grocery store in a town in the Quebec countryside. First, most of the labels are in French, so get ready to test out the accuracy of google translate!…

Weekly Update: Jul 11, 2018

Posted on July 11, 2018 by Annie

You might have noticed the posts are a bit less frequent the last few weeks, as I was kind of blowing through my data plan for a while, so I am watching my usage and trying to use wifi more. I ended my tour of the Canadian boondocks with a stay at Parc du Bic, a lovely spot right on the Saint Lawrence Seaway, which, by the way, is huge. So wide at that point, I couldn’t see across to the other side. I did some hiking with friends and some solo hikes, all with beautiful views. The wild roses,…

Weekly Update: Jul 4, 2018

Posted on July 4, 2018April 2, 2019 by Annie

Once again, I find myself outside the US on that most American of holidays, the Fourth of July. No fireworks here in Canada, they did that on July 1, their Canada Day holiday commemorating the beginning of the Confederation of provinces that formed the country in 1867. I will miss the little sparklers, they are my favorite part of the holiday because it’s what we did when I was a kid in our backyard. I’ve picked up the pace a bit moving towards Quebec City, in what will be a series of three-night stands. I finished my last four-night stand…

Sunday Serenity: Routes and Reasons

Posted on July 1, 2018June 29, 2018 by Annie

This past few weeks I’ve been thinking about routes and reasons. Specifically, I have been debating where to spend the winter. I had been working on a plan to get me to the Pacific Northwest by end September and then down to the southwest by the new. year. But despite it sounding good on paper, I haven’t been moving ahead with things like reservations and commitments. Something was holding me back and I wasn’t sure what. I’ve been doing this trip planning thing long enough (more than two years now) to know that I needed to wait it out and…
