I scribble words onto the screen, I capture the images I see, I look for beauty in everyday life. I’ve been a sailor, a project manager, a tech writer, a programmer, and since May 2016, I have been a vagabond traveling in a 17-foot travel trailer.

52 Frames: Break the Rules

Posted on January 2, 2020September 20, 2020 by Annie

This challenge was harder than I thought it would be: break the rules (like level horizon, “normal” colors, rule of thirds, etc.) to produce a good image. I played with two images, but the first one didn’t really fire up my imagination. It did break some rules (overexposed and not centered or offsides enough to meet the rule of third criteria) but it didn’t really say anything exciting or novel, either. So I moved on to a different image, snapped as I drove by, too late to pull over and get a better shot because towing a trailer definitely limits…

52 Frames: B&W Minimalism

Posted on December 29, 2019September 20, 2020 by Annie

Last week’s challenge was two-fold: black and white and minimalism. Hmm. I was in motion a lot of the week, making my way down from the central coast of California to the LA Basin, so I didn’t have a lot of time for searching out excellent locations or unique places. This shot was from my campsite at Pismo Beach, just after the sun went below the horizon. Venus is in the upper right area, but darned if I can see it in the photo 🙁 When I was still up in the Santa Cruz area, I found this little spiral…

52 Frames: Water

Posted on December 19, 2019September 20, 2020 by Annie

Last week’s 52 Frames challenge was water and I was initially excited because I was going to be by water all week long. Excellent. Only the fog and rain came. Not so excellent. So I challenged myself to capture the mood of the bay in my images. I experimented with black and white, which gave it a film noir feel. Not quite was I was going for, but I do like how the wharf looks and the little figure at the base of the cliff. In this image I was up high, on my own cliff. In the image below,…

3 for Thursday: Water View

Posted on December 5, 2019July 19, 2021 by Annie

One of the best things about full-timing in my tiny trailer is that I can go where the water is. Sometimes, like today, this is not all that exciting, because the water is all rain and it’s all the time. But I digress… Some images don’t make it into a post about a place but I love them anyways and want to share them. This surfer, headed out on a cold but sunny afternoon, is one of those images. Then there’s the Northern California coast on a stormy day, between the rain showers. And we’ll end with an image from…

52 Frames: Abstract

Posted on December 4, 2019September 20, 2020 by Annie

The last few years, I’ve participated in a group called 52 Frames, which runs a weekly photography challenge by giving us a word or concept to explore during the week, then you submit your best image to the group by Sunday night. Last week’s challenge was Abstract so I decided to have some fun with the iPhone and an app called Slow Shutter. I stood on a bridge over the Russian River and looked westward. I walked around the campground, a bit east of the bridge and found another good composition. The sunshine on the hills across from me lit…
