I’ve been spending the last few days in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. With the right light and some hiking, I’m amazed how beautiful this area is. Wandering around the campground in Sequoia National Park and found this watery shot after scooting down the rocky hillside. Literally on the side of the road for a different shot, and saw this as I got back in my car. It turned out to be the much better shot. And, well, you can’t mention being in Sequoia National Park without showing an actual Sequoia. The branches start at about 120 feet…
Weekly Update: Dec 13, 2017
Every morning for the past week, this has been my view stepping outside my trailer. Man, sunrise on Monterey Bay just does NOT get old. And this is the beach I walked on almost every day. Again, never gets old. My campsite was on the bluff overlooking the beach, and this view is looking straight out from my picnic table. I did some playing around with HDR photography this week for a photo challenge, and liked how it played up the tones of the fragmites (those frond things) and deepened the overcast skies (thanks, Thomas Fire, for all that haze……
Sunday Serenity: Anticipation
This week, I’m perched on the edge of the water and the edge of the continent, and I’m up early every day in anticipation of the sunrise. The dark sky lightens slowly, barely changing from minute to minute until the first golden light spreads across the horizon. The sky continues its golden turn and now the water picks up the light and changes colors. And then there it is, the sun peeping over the faraway hills. The anticipation is over, the day has begun. Be happy in anticipation of what’s coming. Abraham Hicks

Wait, where the heck did 2017 go? It’s already December? I know where the last three months went, it’s right here on the map: coast to coast, from September 5 to December 5, racking up 5200 miles. Not the most direct route, but a fun one with lots of family and friends along the way. Now that I’ve made it through that meandering line across the US, I’m going to enjoy California for a month. I’m back in Santa Cruz for a week or so, enjoying my west coast home and catching up with friends and enjoying the beach. Let’s…
Lighting Up the Trees
Golden hour is that magical time before the sun sets, where the light low across the horizon emphasizes the golden tones of anything it touches. As the sun was slowly disappearing over the hill at last night’s stop, I had enough time to take some shots. These two, and the one at the top, are the ones I liked the best. These two trees stood alone in an otherwise bare field, but with the right angle and the golden light, it’s clear they own that field. I love old trees, they are survivors. I walked almost all the way around…
