Outer Hebrides: Dalbeg Beach, Isle of Lewis

Posted on June 22, 2024June 22, 2024 by Annie

Down a rutted, single-track road with three blind spots where —if you’re lucky — you either slide through without meeting another car or — if you’re not — one of you backs up to a passing place, keep going until that road ends at the tiny beach at Dalbeg (Dail Beag).

It’s worth white-knuckling those blind turns to get to the yellow sand and rocky outcrops that define this beautiful spot.

It might be the start of high season as far as touristing goes, but at Dalbeg Beach, it was me and the water for most of the hour. The parking lot is tiny (maybe six cars if you work it right) and that twisty little spite of a road eliminates big tour buses and large caravans, so it’s mostly the hardy, adventurous types that make it all the way down. Like me 🙂

I decided to play with the Live/Long Exposure setting on my iPhone camera, which works so well to get those smooth water photos like this one below. How did I do this? First, turn on the Live setting in the camera, then take the shot. Afterwards, use the pull-down menu when you’re looking at the photo to choose the Long Exposure option. When I downloaded the photo into Lightroom, the long exposure setting remained, so I had this beautiful shot with very little effort.

The top of the beach is lined with rocks, big and small (as you can see in the top photo), and someone had made a statuesque cairn. I added a small stone to the top and took this photo, my way of leaving a trace behind, but one that the first big storm or wind will erase, and that’s as it should be.

The magic is about living for today and allowing yourself to breathe and be happy.

OMG! Those roads! Lanes, really. You know it’s tight when you have to pull in your side view mirrors. So worth the effort though. Just gorgeous.
