Way back when I lived in the Hudson Valley, I would often spend a few hours on the grounds of the Vanderbilt Mansion in Hyde Park, enjoying the shade trees and the view of the river. I never went into the Mansion itself, though; I didn’t need to. The grounds were enough for me, a huge park on the east bank of the river.

Last week, I suggested the grounds as a place to meet my old friends, Emma and Meg, for a short hike and some lunch. They hadn’t been there, and I hadn’t been in at least 30 years, so it was an adventure for all of us. First stop was the formal gardens, which were in fine form, despite being a bit dry and at the tail end of summer. As you can see, it was a beautiful day for our visit.
The bees were buzzing and as much as I tried to capture them, I didn’t really succeed. But the flowers make a pretty picture, so you can enjoy that.
I loved this little part of the garden. I could imagine myself as a lady of leisure, reading a book in the shade of that enclosed patio, or perhaps writing the next great American novel. I would insist, however, on the fountain being in working order!
The three of us moved onto the forested path that ran parallel to the railroad tracks (Hi, Amtrak!) and let the shade shelter us as we caught up on each other’s lives. It’s really a beautiful 2+ mile trail, far from the traffic of Route 9 and with slight peeks at the river if you’re alert. We got back to the parking lot and drove down to Bard Rock to check out the views and figure out what all those buildings were on the west bank.
Sometimes it amazes me that we’ve known each other 40 years, back when we were all working on the Clearwater. That boat has been a lucky charm for me in so many ways. The next evening I met up with those two friends and a few more at a winery, enjoying dinner, music, conversation, and the Super Blue Moon. As Cara said that evening, we are lucky to have met so long ago and still enjoy each others’ company. Until next time, old friends, and thank you for this time together.
Can you imagine us years from today
Sharing a park bench quietly? How terribly strange to be 70.Old friends, memory brushes the same years

What a wonderful place to catch up with old friend! Your super moon shot is absolutely breathtaking!
How wonderful, both the gardens and the friendships.
“…we are lucky to have met so long ago and still enjoy each others’ company” oh, how well said!!!
And us, too, my friend!
