Ah, summer 2023, you’ve been so weird as far as weather goes. From smoky days to thunderstorms and rainy nights, it’s been a wild ride so far. Here’s four views from so far this summer…
That first phot at the top of the post was a random shot taken while walking around the campground in Charlottenburgh, Ontario. Sometimes a good shot is a combination of timing, light, and luck. Definitely the case with this one. I walked by several more times during my stay and it never looked this beautiful.
This next one was taken on a very smoky day as I tried to do some sightseeing around Notre-Dame du Mont-Carmel, in Quebec. Most of the scenic landscape shots were a waste of time, filled with yellow haze from the fires burning in the north. As I was stopped at a traffic light, I looked out my passenger-side window to see this view, so I rolled down the window and took a few shots as I waited for the light to change. Sometimes opportunity is just about looking in another direction.
While driving up the right side of the Riviére Saint-Maurice, I passed through the little town of Grandes-Piles, pulling over to take some photos of the old church steeple there. But, when I turned the other direction, towards the river, this line of clothes hung out to dry caught my eye.
One of my photographer friends has an eye for doing flat-lay photos and I always admire her images. While washing dishes a few weeks ago, I realized that I had a pretty color combination of things so I tried my my hand at a flat lay. (Yes, I had more dishes to wash, but I stopped to arrange these little bits before I piled the rest of the clean dishes on top of them!).
Sometimes, the most ordinary things, from laundry to clean utensils, make me look at the idea of beauty in a new way.
I think it’s important to find the little things in everyday life that make you happy.

The weather has been CRAZY this year! We didn’t have the hot dry August we usually do, our grass and trees look like we live in the Pacific Northwest. It was warm even hot in the early spring but now it’s cold and rainy. My sister and I just camp home from camping in Canada where it rained on us several times. We had clotheslines full of sheets and towels up almost daily.
I like the clothesline shot. You never see that in the US anymore. I saw it more in Europe. Also, the color combo is great in the flat lay photo.
I love all these photos for different reasons. Nice variety. Thanks for sharing them!
Okay, I love everything about each of these photos. The first one is gorgeous, and you’re right: timing is everything. Seeing a cemetery among the trees must have been a bit startling, but what a beautiful place to rest in peace. Then the clothes on a line… Well it has been a while since I’ve seen that, and your photo evokes a wonderful sense of nostalgia. My favorite is the flat photo of the utensils. It is an artful shot and something you might see every day but rarely appreciate. Safe, happy travels, Annie.
Ah, how I love clothes lines. I always cherish the moments when I find them in the wild!
I love your colorful utensils! And thanks always for these posts. It’s so refreshing to see nature, the outdoors, bits of your life as I sit here in a room with no windows typing away.
