St. Lawrence: By Land

Posted on June 28, 2023June 27, 2023 by Annie

I spent a week exploring the Thousand Islands region, first by land (this post) and then by water (the next post). It’s a huge place, actually, and it’s hard capture the scope of it, but I’ll try. At least I can capture some of the beauty.

Views from Canada

Let’s start with the Canadian side. I had to take the Ridgeline up to Brockville for service, so on the way home, I took the scenic route. Of course I did! The Thousand Islands Parkway is a beautiful drive, with many places to pull off and enjoy the views or have a picnic lunch. I stopped at the Thousand Islands National Park (Canada) visitor center, bought a day pass and walked along the shoreline for a while.

These Canada Geese were also enjoying the shoreline. The parental units get a bit protective of their young so I gave them all a wide berth.

Canada Geese in Canada!

Parks in Canada have a Red Chair thing going, where you can find the best views, and they weren’t wrong about that at this park. I enjoyed the chairs and the view for a while, watching those two kite-boarders have fun in the wind.

This next photo is really from my camping friend, Karen, who is always on the lookout for poison ivy. Karen, here’s the French translation for your next trip north 🙂

Views from the US

Wellesley Island in New York had some great sunsets amid the rain and clouds, and this one was one of the best. Lucky for me there was no one camping on that riverside site so I could stay a while and keep snapping as the sun slid down to the horizon.

The site itself was actually beautiful in the late afternoon light and I spent a while capturing the moss and trees. It looked a bit like I should be finding hobbits nearby, or perhaps wood fairies.

The sunsets were harder to come by at Robert Moses State Park, but this one, presaging a thunderstorm that came through an hour or so later, was worth searching for. I could see the light but not the water, so I drove down different campground roads till I found this shot. Sometimes it’s not easy to get that special moment of light.

Next up, views from the water!

They say no land remains to be discovered, no continent is left unexplored. But the whole world is out there, waiting, just waiting for me.

This was one of my most favorite road trips, when we drove up the Canadian side to Quebec. I so wanted to live (at least for awhile) in one of those houses on a little island out in the middle of the water. I asked a guide later how it works in the winter, as for some of those islands I envisioned the moving ice to slide right over the small island and take out every structure every winter, but he said there wasn’t usually a problem. Such a beautiful part of the world!
