It’s fun to look back at all the photos I took in a year and then see if I can narrow it down to my favorite ten. I’m not sure why some make the cut and others don’t, it’s just gut feel, really.
It takes me a few rounds to get from hundreds of photos to just 10, using the five-star rating system in Adobe Lightroom. (For the curious, my Lightroom folder for 2022 holds 2649 images.) The first run through the year’s folder usually produces 30-40 images, and that’s the easy round. From there, it definitely gets harder and each round takes longer. Sometimes I love a photo for what it means to me, but it’s not technically a great photo. I try to pick the ten photos I’d submit to a competition if I ever actually did something like that, rather than the ten best memories of the year.
So, without further ado, here’s my picks for top 10 of 2022, in the order they were taken. From Arizona to Vermont, Indiana to Georgia, these are the highlights of my 2022 as a photographer.

If you want a higher-resolution image of any of these picks, please drop me a line (using the Contact Me link in the menu bar). I’m happy to provide you with desktop backgrounds or images to print and frame; there’s no cost, it’s my way of sharing the beauty of this world.
That’s the place to get to—nowhere. One wants to wander away from the world’s somewheres, into our own nowhere.
Buggs Island. Spoken like a Virginian. Though the Old Dominion has relented of late. Beautiful stuff, Annie.
I gotta ask you about that, then… is Buggs Island the “don’t want the lake named after that Kerr guy” sort of sentiment?
From one of the many histories of the project:
“It was known as the “Bugg’s Island Project” during the construction years. The 82nd Congress passed Public Law 203, which renamed the project “John H. Kerr Dam and Reservoir,” after the North Carolina Congressman instrumental in obtaining funding and approval for its construction. Congressman Kerr managed to get the funding through Congress even after the $100-million price tag was cut from the budget by committee. Kerr was defeated in a primary just months before the dam was dedicated. And so, his colleagues in Congress named the project for him. Most official signs and most references in North Carolina call it Kerr Lake and the John H. Kerr dam (pronounced Car).
In Virginia, the state legislature — angered by the name imposed in Washington — required in 1952 that the body of water created by the dam shall “forever more” be known as Buggs Island Lake. In Virginia, you will still see signs for “Buggs Island Lake.” And even the state agency that regulates fishing calls it Buggs Island Lake. That’s the Virginia law!”
Let not the facts confuse our Legislature when its mind is made up!
And don’t forget the Buggs Island Brewery, with one of the best bacon cheeseburgers I’ve ever eaten! Thanks for the history lesson, always fun to see state vs. federal tiffs for meaningless things like lake names.
All of these wonderful! Sunsets are always winners. The pond in Ohio when I zoomed in and saw the boats all lined up and the man nearby, made me wonder what might take place next!
No way I could have picked the top ten from all the great photos you’ve included in your blog this year. Thanks for taking the time to make the compilation. .
They’re all so pretty. The Shelburne Museum is so colorful!
Stunning, every one of them!
Love that so many are from NM!
Great photos Annie. I’ve never been to some of these places, like New Mexico for example. Your pictures make me want to visit.
Beautiful photos as always, Annie. I especially love the sunset tree, and the Hudson River sunset!
They are all outstanding, Annie. Some of the others I enjoyed were at the national quilt museum, but all of your photos are outstanding. I wouldn’t have been able to pick just ten.
They are all so beautiful, Annie.
They are each magnificent but I am partial to old barns. Thank you.
They are ALL gorgeous! I especially like the Caballo Mts, the pond in OH and I’ll have to take a ride up the the Shelburne Museum this summer! I’m enjoying your 52 Frames posts, as well! 🙂
Beautiful images. Thank you for sharing.
I’m curious about the frames in Shelburne. What is the story there?
Annie, I like the Caballo Mountain shot best. The sky in the Buugs Island photo is right out of a van Riesdael painting. Nice shots. Rich
You would win any competition. Your love of water “reflects” in these lovely choices. The barn is noticeable in being the only structure, not counting the dock. It must be wonderful to be out in nature so much, thanks to your Alto. Thanks for these pictures that launch dreams.
I absolutely love your photos. Keep it up. Thanks for sharing.
