Weekly Update: May 16, 2018

Posted on May 16, 2018 by Annie

I’m getting closer… one of my big goals this year is to spend time exploring completely new places and eastern Canada is the one I’ve been aiming for the last few months as I camped my way up the east coast of the US. Once this map was filled with red pins, now it’s all green, with the blue showing my current location, about 100 miles away from the Canadian border. I’m ready to go. But first…

I spent the end of last week at Salisbury Beach, which was mostly full of overcast skies broken by brief bouts of brilliant sunshine and one fantastic sunset.

Cold and wind dominated, so it was disappointing I didn’t get the chance to test my new kayak but, as I have learned in my two years of full-timing, I can’t control the weather.

Sunday was drive time, up the coast to Rockland for a great lunch with my old friend and former sailing buddy, Ed, and then onward. This trip has been as much about spending time with people as it has been seeing the sights. Living on the east coast for 20 years means I have a lot of catching up to do, and this last month has been very satisfying in that regard, and my friends have warmed my heart so much. (I don’t post photos of my friends to protect their privacy.)

But I will mention one person… my niece, Brianna, who is starting a business on Etsy making bags, and she made this wonderful lightweight shower tote for me this month. Yes, Game of Thrones fabric FTW! I love it. If you’re interested, click on the photo to jump to her shop.

OK, back to travelogue scribblings…

From Rockland, I wandered up the Maine coast, and I do mean wandered. The average speed on Route 1 is 45 miles per hour, so it was 2.5 hours to get from there to Acadia. I had forgotten how twisty and turn and full of small towns the coast is down east.

It was worth it though, Acadia is stunning and a photographer’s paradise, even on a foggy day.

I have a few more days to explore here before I cross the Canadian border and start my big Spring/Summer adventure, so I’m off to hike and take more photos.

Say what you want about aging, it’s still the only way to have old friends.

Ah, Cape Breton didn’t make the cut this time, I only have 6 weeks before I am in Quebec, so had to choose just a few places. CB and Newfoundland are on my list for next time.

Hi, Gail, unfortunately not, I saw there is an Albert-themed sail and am so bummed I will be on family vacation that day. I hope it’s a wonderful sail, with many stories told about him.

I’ve spent time during two summers on Cape Breton. Hope you get to experience its compelling landscapes and culture on your travels.

That purple+tree silhouette picture is blowing my mind. Enjoy Canada, I’ve always wanted to visit PEI!
