This is the first in what may become a yearly series, looking back at the places I’ve been in my last year and selecting my 10 favorite photos. The first cut had 70 photos, so it took me a while, and some hard choices, to get it down to just 10. (I figured if I published 70, no one would get past the first two or three!)
October 12, 2016. Stewart State Park, Oregon. Had a great time hanging out with my nephew, two Alto friends, and a new couple.October 15, 2016. Bandon, Oregon. Probably my favorite stop on either coast this past year, so nice I visited it twice.November 12, 2016. Ash Meadows, Nevada. I had never thought much of the desert, but after 10 days here and in Death Valley, I was truly entranced.January 24, 2017. Joshua Tree, California. Continuing my desert explorations, I visited a place less than 100 miles from where I grew up but had never seen.February 4, 2017. Chiricahua Mountains, Arizona. My dad dragged me all over eastern Arizona but I never saw this place. It’s breathtaking.February 12, 2017. Oliver Lee State Park, New Mexico. My happy place in this state. Big mountains, bigger sky, and beautiful bird song.April 1, 2017. Very Large Array, New Mexico. A true bucket list item and despite the snow that day, totally worth it.June 28, 2017, Luray Caverns, Virginia. Smaller than Carlsbad but I actually liked it better.June 29, 2017. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I had not expected to be so moved by this place. I’m haunted by it now.July 30, 2017. Falmouth, Massachusetts. Sunset, one of many throughout the year that soothed my heart and brought me peace at the end of a long day.
A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find that after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us.
Hi, Denise, I am way west on the UP right now and heading to WI next so I won’t be near you this trip 🙁

Annie this limiting of photos isn’t necessary based on your assumption that ‘no one will look at them.’ I can only imagine all the great shoots we won’t see! Bring ‘me on.

I loved Bandon as well, when I finally visited it this summer, but that Falmouth sunset kinda beats all..!!
