One of the oddest places in California (and that is saying a lot…) has to be Bombay Beach. So it feels fitting to end the weird year of 2021 with this post. Maybe we’re all living in different versions of Bombay Beach in a matrix run by robot overlords or we’re all just characters in a video game (go see Free Guy if you haven’t yet, it’s hilarious)…

Sending 2021 into the Sunset
I had one absolutely gorgeous sunset while I was in California, so I’m using the end of the year as an excuse to publish the four shots I made as a series. As we approach the end of a difficult year for so many of us, enjoy the beauty of a Salton Sea sunset for a few minutes.

When I was a kid, the worst thing about going to visit my grandparents in Arizona was the desert. Ugh. So dry, so brown, so boring. All I can think now is that I just didn’t get the desert back then. Now I do. It’s beautiful in its own stark, understated way. 52 Frames: End of an Era
For the last several years, I’ve been doing 52 Frames, a weekly photography challenge. I’ve had fun with it, learned a lot, and now it’s time to take a break from it as I wander into the unknown future that is 2022. Here’s the last set of photos for 2021 for your enjoyment.
Scenes from New Mexico
After escaping from Colorado without having been snowed on this late in the season, I landed in the Santa Fe area, caming at Hyde Memorial State Park. (You might laugh at that opening line, but Colorado snowed on my in May and October both, back in 2017!) So far up in the mountains north of Santa Fe that you get no signal, it’s still worth it for the dark skies, the lack of noise (except the few cars that come through on their way to wherever that road goes after the campground), and the small size of the campground.
