Thursday we went on a hike near our campsite because I wanted to see more of New Mexico. It’s sort of like a desert right here but we are in the mountains, Annie said, so I wanted to do some exploring. We laced up our hiking boots and off we went down this trail!
There were lots of trees but they look really different here in New Mexico. This one is called a One-seed Juniper.
It looks like two trees, but it is just one tree that sends up two (or more!) trunks to survive dry periods. It can even STOP growing when the land around it is too dry!
Then we saw this bird fly by us and sit on a branch. I stayed really, really quiet while Annie took a picture. Look how BLUE this bird is! When it is flying, it is just a blur of blue feathers! It’s my favorite bird in New Mexico!
When we got to the top of the mountain, we could see for miles! Annie said those mountains way over there are more than 30 miles away! And those clouds? That is a rainstorm! It is so cool that I can see a rainstorm far away (and it’s not raining on us!)
On the way home, we saw these little stalks blowing in the wind. They look like glow worms only they are plants! The sun was hitting them just right to light them up like this.
And then we turned a corner and there was Breeze! We were home from our hike!
Here’s the map for today, we hiked the trails inside the red circle.
See you next time!
