Oh, Maine, it’s been a year since my brief visit last July and even longer since I spent any time with you. So I was really looking forward to a week and a half in South Freeport, looking out at the water.
Way back in April, I made reservations at Winslow Park. No hookups, but good solar and water views and breezes that make for perfect days and cool nights. Five months later, here I was, and boy, was I happy to be back on the coast. It doesn’t matter which coast or where, it’s the water that matters.
Every time the tide went out, the coast became a different creature entirely, and I never tired of it.
You can walk out to the point and see views like this, which feel so quintessentially Maine.
And this is the same cove, looking from about 180 degrees different.
Sunrise, sunset, it was all good. And this tree made it even better.
Best of all was that I was camping with friends. Karen and Steve were the original party planners, way back in the winter, and it was Karen and me on the website doing reservations on April 3. Three other Altos showed up the first day I was here, and that was great fun, as we knew each other from previous gatherings. Mary and Mike, and Rory the wire fox terrior, my housemates from Florida, were a late addition to the party, and one that I quite enjoyed.
Yes, there were lobster rolls. And clam rolls. And freshly steamed lobsters. And even some Thai food. It was all good.
There was a trip to Portland, where Mary and I enjoyed Asian eats and their ceiling decorations, and then hit up the Museum of Art (which is a whole ‘nother post).
The other trips to Portland that week weren’t as fun, as one of our party fell ill and spent a few days at Maine Medical Center. The staff there was kind and caring, and all was well in the end, and they are back home safely after the unplanned “campout” at the ER and in a hospital bed for a few nights.
As a reminder to myself that seasons change and so do our lives, especially as we get older, here’s the first colorful burst of fall foliage. Leaves fall, but they come back the next year. We fall, we get up, we go on as best we can. That’s life.
I shared your blog posts with friends who were in Maine about the same time as you. I enjoyed their pictures too. I think I’m in love with Maine especially now that I’m landlocked. However, I’m heading to Santa Cruz next Saturday for a wedding up in the mountains above Aptos at the Amphitheater of the Redwoods. https://www.amphitheateroftheredwoods.com/ Spending the night in Scotts Valley. It’s been a while since I’ve been “over the hill.”
So many beautiful photos, especially the one with the colourful leaves -Maine looks amazing in September, and I am glad you had a wonderful visit. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx
Glorious photos! I haven’t been back to Maine since my brother passed away, almost two years ago, so I appreciate seeing your views, even more so. I saw my first Fall foliage yesterday, here in this Portland! And ate an unexpected find yesterday too…. a lobster roll! (Fridays, at Zupan’s.) Yours has more lobster in it… lol.
It’s funny, when my friend I were walking down the street the Maine Portland, we both felt like we were in the Oregon Portland! Similar vibes, and the older OR architecture echoes here.
So glad your friend has recovered. Lovely photos and musing as always. Thank you.
Beautiful photos, taken by a beautiful person. Thank you for everything.
