Why do one flashback when you can do a five-year retrospective of where I was in April?
In 2012, I was living in Aptos (near Santa Cruz, CA) and was in the middle of a month-long project of taking a photo a day of the beach where I lived. This image is still one of my favorites: it was just before sunset and the light hit that little piece of kelp just right.
2013 found me in Seattle, enjoying my first Spring in that city. People often think of ferries when they think of Seattle, but I mostly think of the beautiful flowering trees and gardens that heralded the end of Winter.
2014 found me visiting the Goldstone Deep Space Network, as part of NASA’s outreach efforts via social media. I think this might be the day I fell in love with radio telescopes.
2015 was when I met my first Alto, up in BC, and decided this was my future. As you might be able to guess, I was pretty excited about it. Two years later, almost to the day, I’m sitting outside my own blue Alto, writing this blog post.
2016 marked the end of my Seattle stay, and I still kind of miss watching the cranes go up and down and create skyscrapers. It was a uniquely Seattle way of measuring time: when I moved there and started working at Amazon, this building was a block of mostly abandoned one-story 1950s-era buildings. When I left Seattle in August of 2012, it was almost open for business as the newest Amazon skyscraper.
Where were you a year ago, three, or five years ago? Do you know?
Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.

I learn a little bit more about photography every time I read your blog. Beautiful pictures!
Thank you, Conrad! I am using some of my free time to study up on how to use the features of my fancy Sony A7, and sometimes it works!
We had a beach house in Aptos from 1959 until 1978. Last summer I camped at New Brighton Beach. It was so fun t walk down memory lane.
