Several months ago, I joined a kickstarter for a folding bike, and this week, the kickstarter delivered! The company is Bike Friday, so what better day to introduce my new bike than a Friday, right? Here it is posed against a creek at Carpinteria State Park.
After giving it a good test ride around the campground and adjoining neighborhood, and using all three gears to see how easy it is to shift (and it is crazy easy), I made it back to the Alto and decided the two, bike and trailer, needed a formal introduction and photo shoot, so here is that special moment (those things on the propane tanks are Luci solar lights, charging up).
Did I mention it’s a FOLDING bike? Yeah, it gets small. Like easily fit into the back seat of my Subaru small. And light. 19 pounds of bike is easy to lift in and out of the car. Takes about 2 minutes to get it all folded up, and as I get better at the quick release things, I bet I can get that time down to under 60 seconds.
And because Bike Friday is so cool, I even got a nameplate on my bike. Wow!
Last fall, I had to choose in my budget between a bike and a kayak, and at times while I was waiting for the bike, I wished I had chosen the kayak instead. But now that the bike is here, I’m happy I picked it and I can see a lot of tooling around campgrounds in my future.
All it needs now is a name. I’m thinking Green Monster, in tribute to Fenway Park and the Red Sox. But I’m open to suggestions…
