One of my favorite things on ocean beaches is finding kelp that has been ripped free and then tossed carelessly onto the sand. The kelp has a beauty of its own, although many people think of it as weird, so today’s Freaky Friday gives kelp its due.
This group of kelp bladders, piled high after a huge storm, were lit by the late afternoon sun into a sculptural beauty.
Sometimes you can see how the holdfasts, the roots that anchor kelp to the ocean substrate. Imagine how much force it took to rip them loose.
This group of kelp stipes reminds me of a sailer practicing their knotwork.
