I know that title is in all caps! Because PELICANS!!! I love those birds, and today, they flew right over to my side of the water and it was like they were posing for my camera, at least till my battery ran out. These are the American White Pelican, which is second only to the Brown Pelican in my list of favorite birds (which is a short list and consists of pelicans and bald eagles and great horned owls).
This flock was clearly having dinner, skimming the shoreline along the beach, much to the consternation of the egret who had gotten their first.
When they feed, they dive beak first for little fish and stuff. It’s a pretty funny sight, actually.
Here’s a closeup of two of these beautiful birds.
They are one of the largest birds in North America, with 9-foot wingspans. Here’s a triptych of two coming in for a water landing.
If you want to read more about American White Pelicans, the Audubon page is a good place to start.
I will be around Bodega Bay till next Friday, so I’m going to be looking for brown and white pelicans every day. There was a whole colony of brown pelicans on the jetty, so I’m hoping to see more of them. Whee!!!
