Another early start, after a good breakfast (we both like our pancakes and bacon!). Time to see what’s up north!
First stop, Rathtrevor Beach State Park. We definitely weren’t the only ones out there enjoying the sunshine and good weather!
The views were gorgeous!
And I managed to get a shot of my favorite road trip companion, too.
His favorite was this huge stump of a tree. No idea how it got here, but it seems to be a permanent resident now.
Then a hop, skip, and jump up the highway to French Creek, our next shot at seeing the water. Worth the short detour!
Another quick stop was this little pocket beach, with a rock almost cracked in two.
And here’s a closer look at it…
Somewhere north of that, things got a little fuzzy as far as navigation goes. No cell phone, no maps, so we just wandered along and then saw this odd sight out on the water. Some kind of fishing gear, an old ferry, and who knows what else. Just another example of how, on an island, you make use of what you have because it costs a lot to bring things over from the mainland.
Just north of that, we could see a bunch of seasonal floats in the water, holding fishing gear. Turns out there’s no dock in this area, so the boats must use the floats as their home base during the season.
A lunch picnic turned into a free airshow, since our little park was right next to the local airport. Someone enjoyed the show!
After reaching the town of Courtenay, we turned around and headed back to Nanaimo. By then, the fog had cleared off and the brilliant sun was out. Yay for sunshine!
While someone watched a little football back in the room, I wandered around the harbourside taking pictures. I liked this one a lot.
And I got a good view of the Bastion, where the Hudson’s Bay Company set up their first fort on the island over a hundred years ago. It’s a creaky old thing, and the tours were over for the day, so I couldn’t see inside. Not sure I wanted to go, it doesn’t look very roomy!
And with that, and a generous helping of KFC and Chocolate Mint Chip ice cream, Day 3 of the Road Trip came to a close.
